Mondes arabes is a peer–reviewed political science journal focusing on the Arab and Muslim worlds. It is the result of an ambitious project aimed at revamping Maghreb Machrek, created in 1964. The goal of Mondes arabes is to publish research articles by scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds (anthropology, geography, history, political science, sociology, etc.), thereby promoting the decompartmentalisation of research debates and approaches. It fosters scholarship that is based on a sound methodology and is attentive to social and political practices and interactions as well as the historical context in which the research is embedded.
The main themes covered by the journal are as follows: political systems and institutions; forms of participation; social mobilisation; social roles and institutions; political economy; cultural and everyday practices; transnational dynamics and international relations.
The published articles present original sources and materials attesting to a thorough knowledge of the field. The analysis engages with a substantial body of knowledge drawn from the international literature in social sciences. The journal seeks to understand past and current transformations that affect mainly the contemporary Maghrib and Mashreq regions, yet allows itself to open up its geographical scope to bordering countries as well.
Mondes arabes is made of thematic dossiers, varias, and other innovative contents. The publication of thematic special issues is led by one (or more) guest editor(s), seconded by a member of the editorial board (see ‘How to submit a thematic special issue’).
The journal is published in print and digital formats. The submitted articles must not have been published elsewhere, even partially. The authors should anonymise their manuscripts in preparation for the peer reviewing. Further to their articles’ submission, authors receive three anonymous reports, written by reviewers from inside and outside the editorial board. The decision of publication is based on these three peer reviews, which are sent to the authors and can be of three types: acceptance with minor revisions; acceptance with major revisions and resubmission; or rejection. In the second case (resubmission), the final decision – be it positive or negative – is taken after a second round of evaluations and depends on how the author addressed the comments and suggestions for amendments made by the anonymous reviewers. The editorial board can also reject articles that do not match the editorial line of the journal or that fail to meet the scientific requirements of an academic article in social sciences.
